The midfielder for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Alex Iwobi, is allegedly thinking about leaving the team since he has been the target of cyberbullying since the 2023 AFCON concluded in Ivory Coast.
Having participated in all seven of the Super Eagles’ AFCON games, 27-year-old Alex Iwobi was one of the team’s key players.
Alex Iwobi failed to direct the midfield and deliver precise passes in the Super Eagles’ tournament final loss to the hosts, Ivory Coast, as the Nigerian team managed just about 37% of the ball possession and only managed one chance on goal.
Ivory Coast won their third AFCON championship in history as Nigeria was defeated 2-1 at the conclusion of the depressing match.
Following that, a group of Nigerians attacked Alex Iwobi’s Instagram profile and criticized him harshly for his low output. He was compelled by the cyberbullying to remove nearly all of his Instagram content.
Remember that following the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, the former Arsenal player experienced the same fate? A few minutes after being introduced into a round of 16 match between Nigeria and Tunisia, he was red-carded, which led to severe bullying.
The Super Eagles, who were viewed as one of the favorites to win the tournament, lost in the round of 16 because Nigeria ended the match with a man down.
Following the loss, the majority of Super Eagles supporters flocked to Iwobi’s Instagram page to harass him for supposedly being a part in the team’s early elimination from the 2021 AFCON.
According to a Daily Post story, Alex Iwobi is “actively considering” leaving the national team because of the constant cyberbullying he endures during big competitions.
